Der Film nach dem bekannten Roman von Nobelpreisträger José Saramago erzählt die Geschichte einer geheimnisvollen Epidemie, die in der Zukunft eine namenlose Metropole befällt und zahlreiche Menschen erblinden lässt. Um eine Ausbreitung der Epidemie zu vermeiden, werden die Infizierten vom Staat in ein Lager gesteckt und ihrem Schicksal überlassen. Bald schon herrscht in dem Lager Hunger und Chaos - der Kampf um das nackte Überleben beginnt.
