Der Kunsthändler Simon (James McAvoy) bekommt von dem Kunstdieb Franck (Vincent Cassel)den Auftrag ein wertvolles Goya-Gemälde zu stehlen. Doch Simon hält sich nicht an die verabredeten Regeln und alles endet in einem Desaster.

Simon wird bewusstlos geschlagen und als er erwacht, kann er sich nicht mehr erinnern, was passiert ist und wo der wertvolle Schatz abgeblieben ist. Franck will das Gemälde unbedingt haben und engagiert eine Psychologin (Rosario Dawson) die Simons Gedächtnis auf die Sprünge helfen soll. Die Psychologin führt viele Gespräche mit Simon und versucht auch mit Hilfe der Hypnose mit ihm zum Geschehen zurück zu reisen. Simon rutscht immer mehr in eine Welt jenseits seines Bewusstseins ab und kann bald nicht mehr zwischen Realität und Unterbewusstsein unterscheiden.
