Der ehemalige Star-Schauspieler Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton), berühmt geworden durch die Darstellung des ikonischen Superhelden Birdman, steckt in einer finanziellen und persönlichen Krise.

Durch sein Mitwirken an einem neuen Broadway-Projekt möchte er an alte Erfolge anknüpfen. In den drei Tagen vor der Aufführung gerät der Schauspieler jedoch in unzählige Konflikte, sei es mit dem neurotischen Hauptdarsteller des Stückes (Edward Norton) oder mit seiner Tochter (Emma Stone). Riggan bleibt nur wenig Zeit, um sein Privatleben, seine berufliche Karriere und seine mentale Gesundheit zu retten.
