Weit weg vom städtischen Trubel auf dem tibetischen Hochland führen Darje und Drolkar mit ihren drei Söhnen und dem Grossvater ein friedliches und einfaches Leben. Ein Kondom löst eine Reihe von peinlichen Situationen aus, durchbricht das harmonische Alltagsleben und stellt schliesslich die Familie vor ein Dilemma. Was zählt mehr im Kreislauf von Leben und Tod – die Seele oder die Wirklichkeit?

Balloon erkundet das Verhältnis zwischen Realität und Seele. Das tibetische Volk glaubt an die Wiedergeburt, dass nur das Fleisch vergeht, während die Seele weiterlebt. So prallt der buddhistische Glaube mit der Realität der modernen Gesellschaft zusammen, und sie werden gezwungen, eine Wahl zu treffen.
